Taking Stock
What's on the Horizon? (January 2010) Well, my friends, it’s a new year. In the paper industry, that means the end of the “Black Liquor” tax credits that served to subsidize the industry in 2009 to the tune of $8 billion. That’s right, no typo there. The black-liquor program expired on December 31, 2009, leaving all players to wonder what the ramifications will be for 2010. Let’s take a look at this and other factors affecting the paper market as we move into the New Year.

Mill Round Up NewPage President and CEO Rick Willett Resigns NewPage Corporation announced on January 19, 2010 that Richard D. Willett, Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer, has resigned from NewPage effective January 18, 2010, and will remain with the company as a consultant through March 31, 2010. International Paper Begins Franklin, VA Mill Closure Coy Paper reported on January 5, 2010 that International Paper has closed its uncoated freesheet (business papers) paper machine #1 in Franklin, VA. In November, the company stopped production on its #6 paper machine. As noted in the following press release, International Paper announced last Fall that they would close the entire mill to reduce production capacity. Environmental Stewardship Barnes & Noble and Better Paper Project Promote Magazines Printed With Recycled Paper The Better Paper Project is continuing their partnership with Barnes & Noble to build awareness of magazines printed on recycled paper. There will be two month-long Better Paper promotions within Barnes & Nobles stores in 2010: one in April to coincide with Earth Day and a second in September.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) Inc. has released a new standard that the organization says reinforces its role in supporting and promoting sustainable forest management as one of the world’s leading third-party forest certification programs.
NewPage Corporation, in partnership with a local Wisconsin agency Focus on Energy, recently completed three energy efficiency projects in the mill's boilerhouse.
Mohawk Receives EPA Green Power Partner of the Year Award Again Mohawk Fine Papers Inc. has again been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a leading green power purchaser. Having been awarded the Green Power Leadership Award in 2005 and named Partner of the Year in 2007, 2009 is the third time that Mohawk has been recognized by the EPA. Verso Paper Signs "Save Energy Now" Pledge Verso Paper Corp. announced in December its participation in the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Save Energy Now Leader program in which the Company has pledged to reduce energy intensity by 25% over the next ten years. |
