President’s Letter

O Tannenbaum
Philip_head_shot.jpg‘Tis the season…and for most of us in the North Woods, that means a nice, big Blue Spruce or Douglas Fir in the living room–preferably one we’ve cut ourselves. It is a wonderful symbol of this time of year and a hopeful harbinger of better things to come with the changing of the calendar.

The sight of that stately tree, adorned with holiday decorations, can’t help but bring a smile to the most curmudgeonly Scrooge. But it’s that smell—the pine scent seeping into every corner of the house—that really has the power to transport us. For a few short days each year, the smell of pine wakes us in the morning and greets us when we return home each evening. It transcends faith and tradition to connect the rituals of the season with our natural world. Importantly, that powerful smell of pine serves as a reminder of the beauty right outside our doors and our responsibility to steward our natural resources so these types of traditions and connections can be experienced by those who succeed us.

High-Efficiency Lighting Project Saves Energy at Lane Press
At our facility in South Burlington, Vermont, we are always looking for creative ways to reduce our energy consumption. Most recently, we have initiated a project to replace light fixtures throughout our facility with high-efficiency fixtures and lamps.

Calculate the Carbon Footprint of Your Print Run
Lane Press has created a custom Carbon Calculator that allows our customers to easily calculate the electricity and fossil fuels used in the production of their magazines so they can easily obtain carbon-offsetting credits. This tool takes actual consumption figures at the Lane Press manufacturing facility and weighs them against the annual volume of your publication. The result is your publication's carbon footprint for one year, expressed in tons (standard unit for determining credits).

Soy - Not Just a Condiment for Sushi
While we wouldn’t recommend that you put a dollop of magenta on your raw fish, all inks used by Lane Press are soy-based. For a variety of reasons related to production efficiencies and quality, we maintain two ink sets. One carries with it the seal of the American Soy Association, identifying the publication as “SoySeal Certified”. The other carries the Agri-Web seal, certifying that the ink contains at least 30% renewable, non-petroleum-based oils, including soy, linseed, castor, tall oil rosin and gum rosin.

Our current upgrade to SWOP 2007 11th Edition Specifications is another step in our ongoing effort to utilize effective technology to achieve accurate, reliable color. Please note that as of January 18, 2010, all of our hard proofs will meet SWOP 2007 specifications.
