Taking Stock
Well, print buyers, I have good news and bad news about the state of the paper industry and what it means for you.
Mill Round Up
Sappi Limited, the South Africa-based parent of U.S coated magazine paper maker Sappi Fine Paper North America, recently announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire the coated graphic paper business of M-real for 750M Euro ($1.1B).
Verso Paper Corp. recently announced two significant reductions in their
coated groundwood production: the transition of a top paper machine
from coated groundwood to lightweight specialty paper, and 30,000 tons
of downtime in overall coated groundwood production during the fourth
quarter of 2008.
NewPage Corp. closed its Kimberly, Wisconsin, mill at the end of August.
The Kimberly mill operated two paper machines, Nos. 96 and 97,
producing approximately 500,000 tons of coated freesheet paper annually.
Two Finland-based paper producers have announced plans for
reorganization that include the elimination of jobs. UPM Kymmene, the
world’s largest producer of magazine
paper, is planning to cut 1,600 jobs between 2009 and 2010 as part of
its reorganization. Meanwhile, Stora Enso Oyj will eliminate 1,7000
positions as a result of its reorganization.
Environmental Stewardship
Verso Paper Corp. will provide a $100,000 grant over two years to the
Trust to Conserve Northeast Forestlands (TCNF) to expand participation
in that organization’s Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) group forest
certification program.
Of Interest
Since 1999, Sappi’s Ideas that Matter program has awarded $1 million
annually to designers around the globe to transform
creative ideas into a powerful force for social good. The program
invites graphic designers from Europe, North America, and Southern
Africa to create printed communication campaigns to support social and
environmental causes.
Natural Source Printing (NSP), an FSC-certified and carbon-neutral
source for sustainable, eco-friendly printing, packaging, and marketing
materials, has introduced FiberStone Papers—a line of tree-free, waterproof, low
carbon footprint papers. So far, NSP has been producing labels, unit
cartons, POP displays, casepacks, brochures, catalogs, annual reports,
and high-quality pressure-sensitive labels on the stone paper material.
